Breastfeeding Books

Welcome to Breastfeeding Experiences!

As new mothers, books can be a valuable source of information. Whether written by doctors, other mums, or even celebrities, they all aim to provide comfort and reassurance to us in uncertain times. However, they don't always succeed!

If there's a breastfeeding book you'd like to recommend (or warn others is a waste of money!), please use this form to write your review.

Name: Hygeia
Reviewing: Primal Mothering in a Modern World

Story: At the risk of sounding arrogant, my favorite breastfeeding book is the one I wrote, Primal Mothering In A Modern World for the simple fact that I am sharing my experience, strength, and hope through twelve solid years of nursing my three beautiful children...and now I witness my daughters nursing their young!

Name: D'Anna
Reviewing: So That's What They're For by Janet Tamaro

Story: I loved "So That's What They're For" by Janet Tamaro. Unfortunately, everyone I passed the book onto formula fed.

I found the first couple chapters extremely informative--and they made me incredibly guilty for feeding my first ANY formula.

Name: Angie
Reviewing: Breast is Best, by Doctors Andrew and Penny Stanway

Story: This is an old book now, out of print in the UK, but beg borrow or steal to get one from abroad! It's the original breastfeeding bible, encouraging mothers to breastfeed before breastfeeding was in vogue. This will give you the confidence to face the doubters, to persevere when you feel tempted to top up on formula. It's written in good language, with just enough science to give the reader some credit, but not enough to baffle you. I got a copy from my mum, but I see you can get them on some websites second hand, or imported from Australia.

Name: Lesley H.
Reviewing: What to Expect When You're Breastfeeding ... And What if you Can't by Clare Byam-Cook

Story: I had expected this book to be controversial, and I was not disappointed! I know of several friends who got really angry about the advice in this book, saying it was downright wrong! It does go against lots of things you will learn from other sources ... ie that your breasts can empty, but I also think it is a valuable resource for those who are struggling with breastfeeding as it doesn't make you feel bad about not succeeding in every area. It's a more realistic guide than many others I've read, as it actually acknowledges that not everyone will succeed at breastfeeding in a way that will make people feel much better!
